Do you know the Jetta?
The first-generation Jetta, also known as the square-body Jetta, rolled off the production line at FAW Car Plant in Changchun, China on December 5, 1991, with an original price of 200,000 RMB.
Limited by immature manufacturing technology, the early production lines were far from perfect. All vehicle parts relied on imports, resulting in a localization rate of less than 10% and extremely low production capacity.
After 1994, FAW-Volkswagen launched localized production of auto parts. The localization rate of the first-generation Jetta rose sharply year by year, surpassing 84% in 1996. The car price dropped significantly, which fully opened up the civilian vehicle market and brought explosive growth in sales volume.
Powered by a 1.6L inline four-cylinder gasoline engine with 53kW (72 horsepower) and matched with a 4-speed manual transmission, it is a 4-door 5-seat front-wheel-drive sedan. Famous for its solid durability, fuel economy and easy maintenance, it secured its status as one of China’s legendary "Three Classic Sedans".
Liaocheng Jiaoyun Auto also entered a new era and began its sales business of FAW-Volkswagen vehicles. New staff have injected fresh vitality into this time-honored transportation enterprise. Back then, we often talked about different car models in our daily chats.
When we were little, we thought the square-body Jetta looked really cool and ran extremely fast. Now we feel the world is developing at a rocket speed. For us, the square-body Jetta is never merely a car. It stands for the morning glow with gasoline scent lingering on street corners in the 1990s, as well as a steering wheel heading for the future. We firmly hold the wheel and drive towards a bright road ahead.
